Can Impact Fiction Help Free Whales?

Green Wave shares a short story about rippling into change

At Green Wave, we’ve always believed in the ripple effect—that small, intentional actions can grow into powerful waves of change. But what if one of those ripples was a short story?

At the end of last month, longtime artivist and rave scene veteran, JIVANA, released XTraction, a piece of flash fiction which envisions her character, Raver J, and rave crew breaking into a closed down marine park to set abandoned whales free. JIVANA considers this piece, "impact fiction" as it is a fusion of magical realism, marine advocacy, rave mythology and is serving as an actual micro-fundraiser. The story is just a few pages long and priced at a meager $2 to encourage support. All proceeds benefit the grassroots organization that inspired her story, Tidebreakers. Although there have been a few dozen sales, Xtraction has raised over $500 for the Tidebreaker coalition, who are marine defenders working to free cetaceans worldwide and, in this particular circumstance, two captive orcas and multiple dolphins still held at the closed-down Marineland Antibes in France.

All of this is really about imagining how change can happen through music, art, myth, and collective will. - JIVANA

Inspired by JIVANA's early efforts, Green Wave is doing it's part to amplify this cause by working closely with Tidebreakers and other conservationists to host an online global event—likely in August—that will reveal the inside story of the marine captivity industry and spotlight real-world solutions.

The event will be hosted by celebrity conservationist Captain Pete Bethune, and we’ll be sharing the RSVP form in the coming weeks. Until then, we’re hoping to see something even bigger: that this ripple becomes a wave. Thus, Green Wave would like to invite you— artists, activists, ravers, dancers, ecologists, writers, dreamers, philanthropists— to help amplify through any means of sharing to help us accomplish the goal of assisting these majestic mammals in an appropriate re-homing or being set free. This is a call to action. We'll watch for and co-celebrate who answers.

      💚 Here’s how to support:
📖 👉Download the story for $2 – All monies go to Tidebreakers

📝 👉 Send a peaceful but urgent plea-message to President Macron – France has the power to act

🌊 👉 RSVP for updates and to join the global ocean justice event

A piece of impact fiction might not be able to change the world on its own—but it might capture the attention of the ones who can.
